Hair Dye Disaster

Once upon a time there was a girl named Sarah and she had a best friend named Kaitlyn. One day Kaitlyn decided to dye Sarah's hair. When she got out the gloves from the hair dye box they were much too large so silly Kaitlyn decided to not use gloves. Thus began the disaster. Kaitlyn had black hands and wanted to get all the dye off before the musical. So Sarah searched on google for things that should help and this is the list of everything they tried:
Toothpaste - worked really well
Soap with water and scrubbing with a toothbrush - which worked the best
Exfoliating soap
Exfoliating face gel
Face toner
Eye makeup remover - which did nothing
Peroxide
Metho

When Kaitlyn and Sarah had both scrubbed Kaitlyn's hands with a toothbrush as much as they could Kaitlyn was then left with brown fingers and fingernails.

Then at the musical she hid her hands all night to avoid confrontation.

The lesson here children is always wear protection on your hands when dying hair.

LOL!!!

hehe

Camp Overview Weeks 2-3

Bits and Pieces/Saddles and Spurs was the unit I worked with for the second week at Misty Hollow. The 16 girls lived in the A-Frames along with Nemo and Barbie as the other counselors and Steeple (Kitchen Aide). This was as special education of a week of camp we were allowed to have without being a special education camp. We had many special needs campers throughout all of camp which made it more difficult. Things such as waking campers up in the morning and telling them to change became 20 min activities because they all needed to change in the bathroom. Thankfully, we had a pavilion and a showerhouse with two toilets and 2 showers. The week went well although they were unable to go on a trail ride and I couldn’t ride with them. I was able to ride only twice that week which was a bit disappointing. However, a good point was my secret buddy got me lots more cool things so I had something to look forward to. I got an paper airmail box with a didgeridoo, boomerang, safari hat, and map of Australia (with Sydney in one of the corners but not the correct one) cut out of cardboard plus an article. Sapphire who worked in the barn was my secret buddy so I also got a small horse and candy. For cook-out we made the traditional hobo pie/mountain pie pizzas or grilled cheeses followed by s’mores. Another cool thing was two of my former Brownie Girl Scouts (Gumnuts) were in my group so I could see how they had grown up from 1st grade to 4th grade. Fun part was they couldn’t remember my name, even though one swims with my brother, so they couldn’t guess my name. The theme of the week was Country Western.
Week 3 was a short week at Yaiewano. We had a day of staff training which included a few cleaning jobs, mowing the lake of seaweed, mini-golf and ice-cream, and moving in. I was assigned the 14 Short Stop girls in Fawn. They were entering grades 2-4 but this was their first time at camp so they arrived Tuesday for a three night program instead of the usual five day program. The other group in Moose was the same idea but called Try-Yai for girls entering grades 4-6. Panther (the final unit used during most of the summer) was girls who had Program Aide training but most of them were perfectly fine at camp. They can now help at day camps or with troops. Activities included swimming daily, a motor boat ride, a polar bear swim at 6:15 am that I skipped, and arts and crafts. The theme of the week was Welcome to the Jungle and included a jungle breakfast during Lazy Lady Day. On Lazy Lady day we are supposed to be able to sleep in then just get up for our first activity. However, my other counselors decided that the girls needed to clean the cabin before breakfast so I had to wake them up 1.5 hours early (6:30). They finished super early and were left bored. Thankfully we had limited homesickness and problems, especially compared to our expectations. I lived with Bean, Nigel, and Steeple (Lifeguard now). We had a bit of problems working with each other and one day was crazy as everything in the schedule got changed. The health inspector came, activities got moved and changed, and other things. But Friday came quickly and with rain during the final program the campers were all gone within 45 min so we got to leave an hour early ☺.

YouTube - HP You on You: Wild Girl

YouTube - HP You on You: Wild Girl: "What defines me? What doesn't define me?

I am as endless as memory, bright as sparking fire, powerful like the wing of a hawk, brilliant as a stallion's gleaming eye, beautiful as the bubbles of a baby's laugh.

I cup the stars in my hand and blow them like dandelion heads. The Universe obeys my will, is my will. Seas writhe to reach my toes in the sand, the sun burns to lend me its heat.

I am human. I am all. I am a Child of God."

This was someone's comment that i found was very inspirational so i wanted to share it with you.

Cookoff

Last night, wednesday, me, sarah joy, jaz, carrie, sharna, teesh and danielle (sarah joy's sister) had a cookoff. Each team had to cook at least one main course and one dessert.

Carrie, jaz and sharna were one team and they cooked, shepherd's pie, chocolate and peanut butter spiders (egg noodles covered in peanut butter and chocolate) and apple pie without the base.

Whereas me and Sarah joy or Team Sarah - (kaitlyn was going to be in our team but she went home for her brother's birthday) cooked sweet chilli and soy sauce chops, potato bake with crusty breadcrumbs on top and a packet mix of hedgehog slice.

It was all soo good but there could only be one winner.

But instead of one winner for everything Danielle decided that there was a winner for the mains and for the dessert.

It was like so - Mains - Team Sarah
Dessert - Sharna, Carrie and Jaz

Overall i must say it was waaayy better than any college meal.

Boots and Bridles

My first week with campers was 5 lovely Boots and Bridles girls. We spent the week in the platform tents. Each tent has four beds and canvas around. There are six tents surrounding the staff tent and my girls got to sleep in two of them while Peanut (one of the British counselors) had her 12 Bits and Pieces/Saddles and Spurs girls in three others. Everyone got to share the two picnic tables (Bob and Bob 2) and the latrines. There was no electricity in the unit at all but lanterns and solar lights by the tents worked pretty well. Although most times there are multiple counselors per unit and group there were so many PBSS that Peanut had the overflow girls all to herself with just Bumble assisting with the A-Frame 16 girls (and 2 counselors). Screech (Arts and Crafts) and Kadibug (Program Director) both lived with us but weren't much help with covering our time off during the day.
My group got along really well and loved to play pictionary so I always carried around markers (the connectable ones I got at Big W) and paper. Since there weren't many girls I was also able to ride every day. I am now an ok horse back rider although I wish I had more time to improve. Overall the week went great. At the first all camp evening the staff each have to sing a song to introduce themselves to the campers. Peanut, Screech, and I started singing an adapted version of Mighty Mighty Titans (or whatever the song is called). Part of the way through Screech and I were laughing so hard it turned into a Peanut solo. We sing alot at camp although my group wasn't too fond of it, not even for the required song at the end. We adapted Old McDonald to us with me being Old McRanga had two tents... If I find the words I might write them down so I don't forget them. We sang that song at the last all-camp and also for the parents once they arrived. I also got to tell the girls my real name which they tried to guess all week. But that was life in the tents. If you want to hear what a normal day at camp is like let me know cause I just realized that you guys don't really have summer camps like we do. It seems to be an American thing. My time is up now but hope to hear from you guys soonish :) and Week 2 will finish tomorrow giving me a long weekend.

Camp: Staff Training

On the Saturday after returning home from my wonderful trip abroad to meet all of you, I left my comfortable bed to drive up to Auburn to a camp I had never been to. There I met the rest of the camp staff at Yaiewano. Since I was going to be 2 hours early I also was able to stop for about 10 min to visit with a friend from Uni. Everyone at camp goes by a camp name so the campers can spend all week trying to guess our real name. Some of you guys helped me pick my name but if you weren't aware I'm getting called Ranga all summer. It's very funny to hear people try to pronounce it correctly and I have about 60 people saying it a week. The staff finally has it almost 100% correct after two full weeks.
Anyway: Training was time for us to learn about each other, learn some of the Yai rules, get familiar with the camp, and make real s'mores. Not that I did not appreciate our attempts at smores in Australia but you can't beat graham crackers and real marshmallows. Plus Hershey chocolate. After 3 days at Yai we moved down to Misty Hollow. All of the staff, except me hated moving down here. Something about only 4 showers and 6 flush toilets on the whole camp. But I went to day camp and helped at day camp here for 3 summers total so it's my 'home' Girl Scout camp. My resident camp staff joined for a day with the Day Camp staff and the barn staff before the day camp staff moved on to their second camp and we took over. The week was horrible weather and it rained off and on all day long. Usually that's not too much of a problem but there are big hills between the A-Frames where we lived and the dining hall (main camp). A few more days of setting up camp, bonding through mall trips, mini golf, and icecream, and preparing for the next campers including a horse back trail ride. That Friday I caught a lift up to Yai where my car was to head off to weekend fun. Now I'm off to Arts and Crafts :)

New Zealand and Home

After 10 days of touring around New Zealand with the AAT Kings tour group I saw the highlights of the north island. It was a 4-5 star tour group which taught me to read the website closer before booking a tour. Hopefully you guys got my postcard from the Cape. By the end I was desiring some company younger than 50 but the nice part was having amazing single rooms to myself. The tour ended in Wellington on the same day as an All Blacks Rugby try. After much hassle I finally got my wishes: Cheap food, a bed, and Christian fellowship. Since all the hostels and cheapish hotels were booked Kaitlyn through a few people hooked me up with some girls in Wellington. I got picked up at the museum, joined an English learning bible study for their meal of dim sum (?), then got a tour of the city from locals. Real New Zealand (and Christian) hospitality, unlike the farm stay where they got paid to host a few of us for the night, happened with a free meal, bed, and company at a flat of Arise Church youth. We watched lots of movies even though my official host and a few others had to get up to set up church at 5am. I got picked up to go to the airport before realizing that my flight was at 9 in the evening. Good part was my bag was already checked so I could head to church, post lunch, more movie time, evening church, and post dinner with them. One of them also dropped me off at the airport for a trip to Auckland. Sadly I lost the 12 hours in Auckland that I was going to tour the city and hang out with my contact there.

Monday morning I woke up, packed and got my luggage back from my contact then headed downtown for bungy jumping! Even though I was late they waited for a bit and I got to talk to Trisha from Wisconsin for the whole time. It was great fun jumping off the bridge in the morning. Even cooler was the fact that because it was winter and the 1st jump of the day we all got a second jump for free. This time I tried backwards!

When jumping ended I raced back up the hills of Auckland to get my luggage and rush to the airport. Sadly, I only had $10 in cash so I had to make another trip up and down the hill to get more cash for the taxi ride. It was expensive but the only way I knew I could make my flight and it was less transporting my 70kgs of stuff.
The trip home paired me with some really awesome seatmates so we talked for over an hour of the 12 hour trip to LAX before picking up luggage to go through customs etc. I also received a message to call my mom but thankfully it was just that I missed my JFK-home flight cause I booked it for the morning. The rest of the flights went well but I was so sore at the end from moving my luggage around so much at every airport. Finally I arrived at my semi-local airport to see my parents and start the hour and a half trip home.
I spent four days at home which gave me enough time to unpack most of my Australia stuff, hang out with a few friends, and pack up for camp. I also went shopping for a day and slept in my own bed. I'll write about staff training and camp in a few hours. Plus I have super detailed notes about Sydney and New Zealand which I hopefully will have time to type up eventually.

Lord of the Rings Marathon

Last night, friday, me, jaz, kaitlyn, hayden, steve, bryce, nicole, sharna and a few others u don't know had a marathon of the Lord of the Rings. If you don't know them it's about the one ring to rule them all and in total the extended editions are about 10 hours long.

It's insane but me, jaz and sharna were the only ones that made it through the movies without 'resting our eyes' - everyone's excuse for them apparently not being asleep.

We had way too many lollies so our bellies were making roaring noises and we kept talking in the movies but it was a good night overall.

Me, nicole, steve, kaitlyn and kaitlyns friend who came from Mackay - Hayden, went to maccas after we left sharna's and we had our famous hot chocolates. From here i went back to college and slept from 6 to 12.

Oh, what a night!

:D Kathryn

Ellooo,

Lol we haven't been doing much here really but one thing we did do was that at the fun park we stood on concrete blocks and prenteded to be statues :D

Lol it turned out pretty cool.

Also me and kaitlyn have been cooking a lot together at her house and have been getting compliments on our good cooking which is cool. Connect is really weird without you, but i guess we will have to get used to it.

Brooke (from Parkhurst) is on college now which is awesome because she is godly and i can feed off her if i ever badly need to.

Kaitlyn and Owen are enjoying their houses and are finding it really hard to go onto the internet.
Anyways have fun at camp and everything :D
Love you miss you!
